Redwood varsity women’s soccer team started off their season with a win of 3-1 against CVC on Tuesday night.

Redwood’s forward Ashley Todd 21’ stepped in as goalie for the game in place of the current keeper Oliva Saenz 23’ due to her recent injury. Although Todd does not typically play the keeper position, she was excited to step up for the team. “The position change was definitely a challenge, as I haven’t played keeper since I was 10 or 12, but I am really thankful to fill a spot that my team needed me to play in,” said Todd.

Goals for the game were scored by Paityn Bruce, 24’ and Kadynn Porterfield, 22’. Bruce is a freshman starter for the team this year. Although she is new her hardwork and determination stands out on and off the soccer field. Bruce says, “Being a freshman on varsity is a lot of responsibility. I’m playing with older girls I have watched over the years and looked up to, it was everything I imagined.” Bruce is excited for future games and what the season has to offer.

According to the head coach, Mr. Vieira, “I felt it went really well. We had some first game jitters and made a few mistakes on the field but that’s pretty typical early on in the season. I’m really proud of how the girls showed up in the first game.” Vieria is excited for the season, and has many hopes for the new squad of girls.

Some of Vieria’s goals for the season are to “win a WYL title and compete for a D1 Title in playoffs.” These are the same two goals he has every season. He hopes for the girls to compete the best they can, and win as many games as possible.

The girls kicked off the season very well with their first win of the year. They hope to continue that streak in their next home game on Thursday, March 18 against Garces Memorial High School.
