Scrunchies and Puka Shell necklaces have been a thing since the 90’s. But why are they coming back again? Teenage girls around the age 13-17 are hopping on the trend ‘VSCO girl’.
VSCO girls have taken the world by storm since it recently became a big trend on the popular app tik tok. A VSCO girl is pretty much a girl who is obsessed with the aesthetic beach style. You will usually find them wearing a baggy t-shirt, puka shell necklace, Pura Vida bracelets, scrunchies, messy buns, hydro flask, and Birkenstocks. They will sometimes talk about saving the turtles. On tik tok there is a rumor that VSCO girls say “sksksksk” and “and I oop-” But do they really say that?
VSCO girls are not exactly what you see online, they generally take pieces of the “VSCO girl look,” and incorporate them into their more normal look. Amanda Martinez ‘19 says, VSCO girls are the new fad of 2019. They will soon fade like every other trend.” Although most girls wear some part of the things that are associated with their look, many do not consider themselves one. Martinez went on to say that she does have a hydro flask and wears scrunchies but definitely does not call herself a VSCO girl.
Alex Bower ‘22 says, “ I don’t think that I’m a VSCO girl, but I do like their style. It looks comfortable but it’s not very original.” The clothes that VSCO girls wear have been around forever, and it’s not the first time that girls have worn some of the pieces together. “I have never seen a girl dressed exactly like the online VSCO girls do, but I’ve seen a lot of people who try to look like them.” Their whole look is based on looking like they just rolled out of bed and came to school as is, but they have to put a lot of effort into looking very lazy and In reality, you don’t see many girls around that replicate the exact things that you see on tik tok or say things like, “sksksk,” or “and I oop..” all the time like the online VSCO girl persona is usually portrayed.
VSCO girls are a trend online that you don’t actually see in real life. You’ll see the fashion style that comes with the trend, but not the actual persona. There are barely any girls that would actually call themselves VSCO girls, they just like their style.
