On January 29, Redwood varsity girls soccer competed in a tough game against Hanford. The game went into overtime, but the Redwood girls pulled through with the final score as 3-2.

Evan House, ’20, played the entire game. House stated her opinion on going into overtime, “We obviously didn’t want to go into overtime because it was another twenty minutes of the game… we had already worked so hard the entire game.” House however knew that her team was ready to pull out a win. Hanford girls came back in the second half and was able to score two goals. “We all pushed really hard, and I think you could see who wanted it more.”

Elise Hyde, ’22, played a lot as a freshman. “Everyone was pretty calm during the first half of the game, but when they scored two goals on us, we all kind of knew we had to fight hard.” The team was very encouraging, according to Hyde, and they were all very encouraging and that’s when Hyde knew that they could win this game. “I think we can all agree that the craziest moment was when Ashley Wainwright scored the winning goal.” Wainwright, ’20, managed to make a goal with a header that was delivered by a corner kick by Alondra Sanchez, ’20.

Sanchez said that the best moment was when she was up to take the corner kick and there was only two minutes left in overtime. “In that moment I thought that if I can get this right, someone can get this behind the net.” Sanchez achieved her goal and assisted in the final goal of the game.

Redwood girls soccer are number one in WYL currently. Their final game in league before playoffs February 6 against Mt. Whitney. Looking really strong going into playoffs, they are going to make some noise.
