In the past week, Redwood’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) team participated in the Central Section Leadership Conference online.

The team came back with great success. Fifty-five of the student have qualified to move on to the State Leadership Conference in April. Also, for the 36th time in school history and for the 8th year in a row, FBLA won the Doris Lowe Sweepstakes Title.

The Doris Lowe Sweepstakes Title is given out to the top five chapters at this particular conference.

Jacob Avila, one of FBLA’s advisers, is very proud of this accomplishment. “This award is named after long-time Redwood Teacher and FBLA Adviser Doris Lowe. She was a dedicated adviser and teacher for over thirty years who helped develop FBLA in California and at a National level as well,” Avila says. “We are so excited to win this award because of her legacy that is tied to it.”

Many of the FBLA students have worked hard to get to this point of success and have been rewarded with a spot at the State Leadership Conference.

“It will also be a virtual event that will include online testing, performance events, keynote speakers, and leadership workshops,” Avila describes State.

Keira Bixler, ’24, is enjoying her first year of FBLA so far, despite the unusual process of meetings and competitions online. “The event went well. It was so amazing to watch the dedication everyone had to their event and their determination to overcome the obstacles of this year.”

Bixler came in first in Introduction to Public Speaking. To prepare, she has been using the resources provided by her advisers and practicing her speech daily to make sure she was ready for competition. She will be moving on to State in April.

Gavin Famy, ’21, placed first in Management Decision Making and fifth in Economics and will be participating in State. Famy was able to get past the difficulties of quarantine by “studying for the competition at home with the great online resources that Mr. Avila and Ms. Moore provided.”

Lillie Wasem, ’23, placed first in Creed and will be moving on to State. She practiced her creed daily and continued to challenge herself for the harder questions she would face at this Conference, also helping her prepare for an even tougher State competition.
