Jimena Robles- Journalism

I am a sports journalist for the Gigantea and I write stories on post and pre-game for all sports along with athlete highlight stories. From being a journalist, I have learned how to interview many different people to have an outcome with the best possible quotes. The importance of my work is to inform the people of Redwood about what goes on not only on but off the field. This year, I am proud of how I was able to grab extra information and opinions that others wouldn´t bother to search for. it gives a different point of view to those who watch on the sidelines.

Semester 1 Stories

Female Football Player Changes The Game

This story was the first story that I had written for the Gigantea. It was a spotlight story on a sophomore girl who had been on the roster for the 2022-2023 Junior Varsity season. She was a class of 2025 sophomore and it had been her first time playing on a team. I was able to show the writing skills that I had come into this class with. I however was able to show off that I was able to interview and let the student tell the story.

This story matters because it was a big deal in the school's sports history to show off a girl being on a boy's sports team. This story informs the students of Redwood and primarily girls in sports. This story impacts girls who are nervous to play a sport they enjoy because of gender roles. This helps our reader community by interesting readers in the evolution of sports equality here at Redwood High School.

Include a second paragraph about why this story matters.  Who does it inform? Who does it impact? How does it help our reader community?  How?

A Sneak Peak into Redwood Wrestling Season

This was the third story that I had written during this semester. It was about the pre-season Redwood Varsity wrestling team. In this story, I had to go out and find many freshmen and get as much information as I could from them. This was a bit hard because they too are new to this experience.I had written this story with Michaela Brown.

This story is important because it shows the behind the scenes of a start to a new season. Thuis informs the freshman who are thinking about wrestling this season. Tgis impacts the fans of Redwood wrestling by getting them excited oin a new season. This helkps out the reader community by informing all that a new and exciting wreslting season is to come.

Redwood Football Upcoming Pink Out Game

This was the fourth story that I had written this semester. It was a pre-game story on the annual pink-out game here at Redwood. I feel that this was the best story I had written this semester. I had many good-quality interviews and some heartfelt quotes.

This story is important because it brings awareness to breast cancer. This story impacts those who have family members or who are living with breast cancer by showing that the Redwood community cares and supports them. This helps our reader community by reminding them to support breast cancer especally during the month of October.

The Ranger Seniors of Cowhide 22'

This was the fifth story that I had written this semester. It was an informative story about the players who will be playing their last cowhide game here at Redwood. This story was also written by Micheala Brown. This was a tricky story because most seasons were often off campus due to free 6th period.

This story is important because cowhide is a huge tradition for not only Redwood, but Visalia. This story informed the students of Redwood of the senior player's experiences and feeling about cowhide. This helps our reader comunity by promoting the cowhide game and the intrsst on what it is about.

Redwood Class of 2023 Signees

This was the sixth story that I had written this semester. It was about the seniors who had gotten signed to their college for the sport that they got scouted for. I had written this story with Micheala Brown. This story was pretty easy the only problem was that there was a delay in the posting of the story.

This story is important because national signing day is a huge deal for athletes all around the country. This story informs the people of Visalia who enjoy sports about the students here at Redwood who will go on and continue their careers.

Boys Varsity Soccer Kicks Union From Game-Winning Lead

This was the seventh and final story that I had written this semester. I had written it alongside Michaela Brown. This story was the story in which I had my best headline. This story was a post-game story about Varsity Soccer overcoming Tulare Union's early lead.

This story is important because it provides information on how well the Varsity Socer team continues to do after a terrific season last year. This story is more in the direction of the Soccer fans of Redwood. This helps our reader community by getting the readers interested and wanting to read future stories on how the Redwood boy's varsity soccer team will continue to do.

Reflection

In this area, reflect on your growth. This work should have three parts.

Where have I been?

Before I had taken journalism class, I had thought that I would be doing many interviews and stories. I was for the most part very correct with this in the sense of having much work to do. I did not realize how much went into one story.I though that I would be writing at least two stories a week.

Where am I now?

From taking this class I have developed a few new skills that have help me with my writing progression. I can go into classes and interview students that I do not know of with comfort and ease. I can write stories on sports that I know nothing about or that I have never played by using the information given to me by the players I interview.

Where am I going?

My main goal for next semester is to be more focused and write many more stories within the time periods given to me. Another goal that I have for myself is to deep dive more into creating new questions. A gaol formy section is to be more in contact with each other when it comes to who is writing which stories.
