We always go to every class, every day. It’s always the same 57 minutes at each of the 6 classes. But, this week was different. Redwood went on a block schedule due to the juniors taking the CAASP test, so the whole school went on the same schedule.

We had three classes a day and 2 hours in each class. It was different, in both good and bad ways. Block Schedule is a very controversial topic. Some students and teachers love it, and some hate it.

Here are some of the opinions of students at Redwood.

Aiden Kempf, ‘22, takes honors classes, and has lots of homework for each class. He says, “I don’t like it. It’s really hard because you have two hour classes and it’s a lot more time.” He also says that when you have to “double stack the hard classes on top of each other, it creates a lot of work and it’s tiring.”

Luke Stephens, ‘22, is a swimmer and water polo player. He strives to be an amazing athlete, as well as a scholar student. “I really like block schedule because it gives me more time to do my homework.” Stephens says that, “usually when I come home from practice and have to do homework from every class, it’s hard. It’s easier if it’s just half my classes.”

Block schedule allows for students to focus on certain classes for a longer period of time. Ally Terrible, ‘22, and Lucas Washam, ‘22, are both an avid part of their electives, and block schedule enabled them to be able to put focus on their extra curricular projects. Terrible is an art student, and she says, “block schedule gives me more time in art to work on my projects.” While, Washam is in video class. He says, “block schedule gives me lots of time to record all my videos and edit them in class.”

We only had a block schedule for a week, but some schools have it all the time. El D has a permanent block schedule, and some people think Redwood should too. It’s always a possibility, so you should always keep your mind open and look at the positives and negatives to it!
