Women’s soccer hosts their second annual Red Card Cancer Game this Friday, January 17th during their home game as they face off against El Diamante High School. Players are raising funds for groundbreaking cancer research with all proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society. The Red Card Cancer game is dedicated in honor of two Redwood High School students, Jackson Ford, ’22, and Mandy Redden,’22, both currently fighting cancer.

“We’ve all been affected by cancer in some way, and most recently with our own Redwood students being diagnosed,” said Jason Vieira, Redwood High School varsity coach. “Participating in the Red Card Cancer program is a great opportunity for us to use the game of soccer to help raise awareness and funds to help defeat cancer.”

Ford was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma in November 2019 and has started immunotherapy. He is on the Boys JV soccer team, and a member of the RHS Marching Band. Redden is fighting stage 4 anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL), a rare blood cancer. She is a member of Dancer Force.

Red Card Cancer is a call to action by soccer players to help defeat the world’s biggest opponent by uniting the global game of soccer in the fight to end cancer. Players are selling Red Card cancer bracelets and Red Card pinups for $1 donation. Donations can also be made online at charity.gofundme.com/rhs-soccer.

Come out and support women’s soccer and be part of the action with the JV game at 4:30 p.m., and the varsity game at 6 p.m. A special ceremony to honor cancer patients and remember those lost will occur immediately following the JV game.

Consider a donation today. All funds raised will benefit the American Cancer Society’s mission to end cancer.
