In the volleyball game that occurred last Thursday, August 23rd, the Redwood varsity team came together at their away game against Porterville and won 3 out of 5 games.

A strong moment that the team experienced last Thursday was one play where a Ranger went up for the hit and Porterville blocked the ball but Halle Patterson ‘19 ran as fast as she could, dove on the ground, and popped the ball back up keeping it in play and after that Redwood got a 5 point streak pulled out a good lead from there.

It may be just the beginning of the season but varsity player Madison Tamayo ‘20 says that they all work really well together. In the beginning they did struggle a little bringing up girls who haven’t played varsity before. But now there is a lot of team bonding and talking more during games that helps bring each other up.

During the game they struggled a little bit, but they stayed positive and never gave up. Mia Gilcrest ‘21 said that they all came together as a team and put up a fight to the end, and beat Porterville. Most importantly they didn’t give up on each other.

The team has high hopes for this season. Tamayo hopes to continue to work together and that the girls who were brought up become more comfortable with the varsity level of playing and have more game experience. Winning WYL is also a hope that they feel confident about achieving.

This year, 4 girls were brought up to varsity. Two girls were brought up from frosh/ soph and the other two were from Jv. Gilcrest was brought up to varsity when she was a freshmen. She said that she was a little scared, but now it’s amazing. All the players and coaches are fantastic and she is honored to be on varsity as a sophomore.
