On Friday, February 22, 2019, Redwood High School had a practice meet which was also their second swim meet of the season against Clovis.

Varsity swimmer, Madison Allan, ‘22, felt that it went really well because Clovis is usually the hardest competition by far and Redwood beat them. Her favorite event is 100m backstroke, “We were all really proud because we dropped a lot of time especially a lot of the new girls as freshmen, and we got to do a lot of new events that we haven’t done before.”

Competition wise, it was much harder than their first meet because Clovis is a lot faster than Garces was. Also the weather conditions were a lot more difficult. Allan, ’22, said, “It went a lot more smooth because we had already practiced from the first meet.” She feels that the season will be really good and they are aiming to be WYL champs. She says that they all want to drop a lot of time to get to Valley. One goal that she hopes to accomplish is to get her times fast enough to get to valley and to be in the faster relays.

JV swimmer, Jasmine Luna, ‘22, said, “The very first meet was actually my first ever swim meet. I was definitely nervous because I had never done swim as a competitive sport, but mostly since I was assigned 4 events.” She was scared at first, but after she finished her 50m freestyle sprint she was shocked to find out that she had improved her time by a whole 3 seconds. She became much more relaxed after the first meet and was motivated to improve her times even more. “By my second meet there was a much better crowd and I felt ready for conquering another meet.” She said it was a bit challenging to beat their teams, but there was definitely improvement which was really good for it only being there second meet.

Luna, ‘22, feels very confident about the swim season because they are off to a pretty strong start. “There will always be something new to improve but with the determination I see in our team, nothing seems impossible.” Her biggest goal that she plans to accomplish this season is to get a faster time for her 50m freestyle sprint. “I love doing relays and when it comes to sprints I want to be as helpful and as speedy as possible to help my teammates to our victory!”

The next home swim meet is Thursday, March, 21. If you want to support Redwood swim, come out and watch!
