At the start of the spring semester, Visalia Unified School District (VUSD) implemented a new schedule, with longer class periods. The new schedule was a topic of discussion for a long time. Teachers, students, and VUSD staff debated whether or not a new schedule would be beneficial to the students.

It was decided that VUSD would give the new schedule a try despite concerns about mental health and the fear of students having to stay on zoom for long periods of time.

Mia Zermeno, ‘22, was one of those students worried about the possible effects of the new schedule. She was very open on social media about her concerns and fears regarding mental health and time in class. However, after a few weeks of the new schedule, she said, “The new schedule is not too bad.” She said she liked how “teachers can give more students help” and how it allowed her to be more productive.

Mrs. Moore is an English teacher at Redwood High School. She was one of the teachers who advocated for the new schedule. According to her, “the new schedule was necessary. This new schedule includes built-in time for students to complete independent work while getting support from the teacher if they need it.” Moore hopes for the best for her students. She believes that this schedule was the best option. “I am passionate about student learning and I hope that everyone can continue to realize that this isn’t going to be forever… we just need to make the best of it.”

While some students have found the switch from the old schedule to the new one to be challenging, school officials found it necessary. A solution is that students are encouraged to continue to try their best in their classes and make the best out of this tough situation.
