Sydney joined us here at Redwood on Wednesday January 11, 2023. She is a student athletic trainer here from the University of Idaho working on her clinical hours.

Sydney went to COS and then transferred to the University of Idaho. It took Sydney 3 changes to her major, “I started with a mechanic certification but there are many ways to die from asbestos. Next I went to industrial design to make shoes, but it just didn’t fit. Then I went to ATC (Athletic Trainer Certified) and here I am.”

Although she is in her first few weeks here at Redwood, she has made some great connections and is able to learn so much, she says, “I am very excited, I feel like I’m learning something everyday.”

Even with all the changes in her major, she still chose to stick with Athletic Training. She says “I went to COS cause I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I took a CPR class and a girl threw up on me.” Even after all that she stuck with ATC.

An interesting fact about Sydney is, “I am a first generation junior college graduate and soon to be a masters graduate.”

Just like every other student Sydney has faced many challenges. “When I was in 8th grade, a teacher who happened to be my 8th grade teacher, told me that I wasn’t worth anything and that I could barely probably get a job at McDonalds flipping burgers and even that I’d probably get fired from because I was to stupid.”

When asked how it is to have an actual student Athletic trainer from college, Alex says, “I am very fortunate to have the extra help and I’m excited to share my experiences with her and help her grow into an Athletic Trainer.”

Sydney is here at Redwood until the end of the 2023 spring semester. She is looking forward to going and finishing college with a major in Athletic training and being on her own. She says, “In a few months I am taking the BOC (Board of Certification) Exam to become an Athletic Trainer, hopefully I pass it the first time.”

Even though she didn’t get to be a part of the ATC team during football season, she has been here for almost all of the winter sports season and she will continue to be with us until the end of spring season.

“My favorite thing about redwood is the people.” She says
