In response to growing student interest in college and career preparation, Redwood High School staff clarifies the continued availability of Teacher’s Assistant positions while introducing Academic Tutors and expanding AP and AVID course offerings.

Starting this school year, there is a lot of talk about new changes to the opportunities offered. One major concern for upperclassmen is the possibility of becoming a Teacher’s Assistant (TA) and the potential replacement with Academic Tutors (AT). This situation has become a misunderstanding as TAs are still offered at Redwood, but in addition, so are ATs.

Redwood Administration has been working towards making more students College and career-ready, as well as A-G ready. They saw a higher number in the amount of TAs they had when those students could have been taking one or two classes to become College and Career ready.

Students didn’t fully understand that Juniors were still allowed a free period.

The assistant principal, Ms. Moore, says, “Juniors can have a free period, but it’s dependent goes back to college and career ready or A-G ready.”

Redwood has also added more classes, providing students with additional opportunities. Since Redwood has the most students attending, they needed to adjust their classes so all students can have the same opportunities.

Ms. Moore says Redwood added more AP classes, “We added another AP Bio class this year and added more AP Precalculus.”

Ms. Moore mentions that another added class is AVID ALD [Academic Language Development] for those whose first language isn’t English. The class has more AVID components so that students can be successful after high school. Even the art sections and business sections have gotten additions.

Ms. Moore says, “We found a lot of our juniors and seniors wanting to pursue more college-level courses, so that’s where the AP Bio and Precalc sections opened up.”
