Jackson Abbott ’21 has been playing the trumpet since the fifth grade. “My mom was a flute player, so she wanted to make sure that music was a big part of my life as well, and she kind of influenced me to play the trumpet.” says Abbott.

This year Abbott qualified for Tulare-Kings Music Educators Association Honor Band and State Honor Band. There are three types of bands to qualify for, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band. Abbott made the Symphonic Band.

The audition process consists of obtaining the music online, practicing it, recording it and then sending it over to the judges. Abbott defines the process of auditioning as, “Earlier this year I got the music and I’ve been working on it throughout the year and over time I kept recording…and then sent it over to the judges and then they decided if I made it or not.”

Abbott spends time practicing the music that he gets from online with a private teacher, “He helps me work on it, he kind of edited my audition together for me, and then he gave ma a CD and from there on I uploaded it.”

He is involved in Track and runs long distance, and is member of CSF. He takes a very active part in his church and enjoys it very much. Outside of school Abbott listens to classic rock, “I kind of go through phases, but classic rock is kind of my favorite …Led Zeppelin is probably one of my favorite bands.”

His family is his number one inspiration he has four younger siblings, three younger brothers and one younger sister. “My parents influence me, both of them have been great examples…my friends influence me as well, I have pretty good friends that make sure I’m making the right decisions.”

Abbott feels that music has a high impact on his life, “Ever since then I have enjoyed it, and it’s something I like doing…Sometimes it relaxes me when I am stressed, I can just play, It is always something I have enjoyed doing.”

Abbott hopes to attend BYU and continue to play and master his instrument and later on in the future he, “Sees himself doing something in the medical field.”
