Isabel Barycki- Clubs & Lifestyles
I am a clubs and lifestyle writer for the Redwood Gigantea and I mainly write humans of Redwood for my section. As a clubs and lifestyles writer, I have learned that a lot goes into making this school the best that it Is. Whether it is the students or Redwoods events there's is always a story waiting to be written. I am particularly proud of my work regarding the humans of redwood. I love giving students the recognition they deserve.
Semester 1 Stories
Exchange Students Exchange Perspectives with the Redwood Community
This story was created for this trimesters clubs and lifestyles big story. This story represents five of Redwood Highschools foreign exchange students. Elisabed Verdzaze, Edgar Pincon, Olai Pirtteiniemi, Mati Aveta, and Anastasiia Tkachuk each share their story about attending Redwood Highschool during 2022-2023. I was personally assigned to write Elisabed Verdzaze's story on the diversity of her Country, Georgia, and how it contrasts with America. This story shows my ability to work with a team to create a big project such as this one.
This story matters because it gets to give students a chance to tell more about their country and culture. By writing this story I am informing students on the campus of their peer's cultures. This story reminds students of how diverse Redwood is.
Rangers go Full Wonka for Homecoming Dress up days:
This story highlights the opinions of ASB and students opinions on Redwoods Homecoming dress-up days. This year's dress-up themes were inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They aroused some thoughts from students such as sophomore class president, Ryan Rodriguez, and ASBs president Savannah Torres. This story shows my good reporting skills as a journalist.
This story matters as it gives students an opportunity to express their opinions on something happening in school. This story gives students the chance to express their opinion to a wider audience instead of just their friends.
A Long Awaited Celebration: Rangers Attend Annual Cowhide Rally Indoors:
This story shows the behind-the-scenes in how Redwood's programs make the annual cowhide rally come to life. In this story, ASB as well as the dance program share how they get ready for cowhide and the excitement behind it. This story shows my good resource skills. I believe I am pretty good at communicating with people to get stuff done.
This story is important because it shows the perspective of students and staff involved in the Cowhide Rally. Stage craft and tech crew often do not get noticed at the end of the day. This story the hard work put into making events such as the Cowhide Rally come to life.
Jacob Yang serves his shot as manager of the court on the tennis team:
This story highlights the student Jacob Yang. Jacob Yang becomes the manager of the girl's varsity tennis team. He has been taking on the responsibilities of a manager such as taking scores, helping set up by putting out scorecards for the girls and grabbing scores when they exit the courts and serving as a second set of eyes for the head coach. The head coach of the girl's varsity team shares her excitement about having Jacob Yang as her manager. This story shows my good interviewing skills. I believe I am a good listener when it comes to interviewing people.
This story is important as tennis isn't as popular as a few of the other sports offered at Redwood. By writing this I am informing students that great things happen for other sports instead of football.
Digital to the Pages: Lydia Castillo Steals the Show with her Art Exhibitions
This story is about one of the many talented students in Redwood Highschool. This story highlights Lydia Castillo and her success in making a living out of her art. Lydia Castillo has been able to make a living out of her art by selling it and working on art shows. This story shows my good communication skills as this story took a lot of communication and time to write.
Not many students get recognized for their hard work, that's why this story is important. This story gives someone recognition for their amazing work.
Officer Team and Members of Red Ink Write New Chapter for the Club
This story is about the first meeting held for the Red Ink club. The club presidents, Luke Mueller, and Samantha Smith explain what happens in the Red Ink Club and explain any misunderstandings people may have about it. This story specifically highlights my ability to find a story when there may be nothing to write.
This sorry is important because not many of Redwood's underground clubs get highlighted. At first, the Red Ink club may seem to be a club where you write essays however this story informs students that it is much more than that, it is a club where you can be as creative as you want.
Future Healthcare Professionals Club looks to Empower Rangers Interested in the Medical Field
This story highlights the Fhp club and its goals for this year. Club president Laiba Hassan discusses the club's purpose and why she joined the club. Fhp's club advisor Mrs. Sanchez talks about how the club plans to get students involved in the club. This story highlights my ability to find a story where one is difficult to find.
This story is important because it highlights an important club that does not get a lot of attention. This story lets students interested in the healthcare field know that there is a club for them.
Reflection
Where have I been?
Before journalism 1, I had taken a journalism class in eighth grade as an elective. Because of this, I had a slight idea of what journalism in high school may be like. I assumed that we would be put in teams and together write one story. I was not aware, however, that I would be a part of something as big as the school newspaper.
Where am I now?
I can now successfully conduct an interview. I can write questions for an interview. I know how to be professional. I can write detailed and informational stories.
Where am I going?
Two personal goals I have are staying on top of my work and conducting more interviews, specifically in-person ones. My last goal is for my section. I want to see and write more stories on club events.
