The ASB and Dance programs on the Redwood Campus share what goes into making the cowhide rally come to life.

On Thursday, October 27th, the 2022 Cowhide rally took place in the LJ Williams theater.

As the Cowhide rally nears, ASB works hard to plan and get ready for this year’s rally. Planning for the Cowhide rally takes a lot of work and time which makes it stressful for ASB. Hailey Aston, the activities director and ASB advisor says, “it takes a ridiculous amount of time to plan.” She says “there [are] so many moving parts for the cowhide rally and cowhide in general that it takes weeks to put together.”

Aston says that their goal this year is to “make everybody feel super connected to redwood, to the tradition, and to each other.” For this year’s rally, Aston says she is excited for the videos that Mr. Henshaw’s video classes put on.

Four-year member of ASB Alyssa Sozinho, ’22 is ASB’s Rally Commissioner. Sozinho says her job is to “plan, create, and execute the rallies on campus.”

While running the rally she says ASB runs into issues such as  heat, wind, it not being dark, not being able to use a projector for videos, and not reaching the appropriate volume levels. However, Sozinho says they’ve learned to adapt to these challenges by “creating new traditions and thinking of what the students would enjoy and benefit from.”

As rally commissioner Sozinho says her favorite part about making rallies is “trying to get as many groups on campus represented and included ,also seeing a vision come to life is amazing, I put my whole heart into these rallies.”

Sozinho says that her favorite part about Cowhide rallies is the unity present, “The arms around each other as one school, one community. We forget differences for a moment and focus on one goal.”

Mrs. Lapp is the dance teacher, dance team coach, and hip hop coach at Redwood High School.

She says the process that goes into making a dance for cowhide involves “deciding what kind of theme and style we want to do, after that creating the choreography and teaching the choreography, then deciding on a costume for it, and then cleaning the routine” throughout the span of a month.

Lapp says cowhide is, “more fun than stressful” for the dance team. The inspiration for their dance is to “get everybody hyped for cowhide, to have fun, and be entertaining,” Lapp says.

Each year, Cowhide rallies prove to be stressful and fun for everyone involved in making it come alive. At the end of each rally Aston says “when the rallies go well it’s a huge sense of relief and satisfaction.”
