Maria Barillas, ‘19, and Lynice Luna, ‘21, made part of school history by qualifying for State Championships a few weeks ago. The first Redwood wrestler to do so was Brenda Espita in 2014.
The day long event was held in Bakersfield after a few days trip to prepare for the upcoming matches. “It was hectic and very nerve wracking, but it was so fun,” said Luna. Luna and Barillas fought very hard throughout the season, and they made sure to fight even harder at state. They won a few matches and lost a few, but they kept their spirits high throughout the entire events.
This was a momentous occasion that put a lot of pressure on the girls. Both of the girls had to preserve and fight as hard as they could. Although there was a lot of pressure, they believed it was remarkable to be such a huge success.
Although, not all the girls got to go to state, the rest of the team still had a great season. “Before state, the girls did really good. They worked really hard and pushed through it,” says Luna. They won valley and accomplished many of their goals for the season.
“It was really awesome, but it was also bittersweet because I wish I would have done it sooner. However, it was the best way to end my wrestling career,” says Barillas. All the hard work of the girls paid off. They had a great season and worked to accomplish all their goals.
So if you want to become a girls wrestler next year, you should challenge yourself to join.
