On February 6, Redwood varsity girls competed in their final match in league against Mt. Whitney. The girls came out on top with the final score as 1-0. This qualified the girls to move on to the Central Section Playoffs. It also solidified their outright championship title for WYL, their 8th year in a row.

Coach Viera was very proud of the girls for winning WYL and doing so well this season. “This league was the most competitive and I think we really dug ourselves into a hole but we were able to come out of it,” Viera mentions. The team prepares the same for each game and they have the same mentality. Anytime there is chance to win, the team focuses on what they have to do. “The game did heighten our mentality and did make us focus more.” According to the coach, there was a good vibe all year long.

Sydney Somavia, ’21, was excited to have won her second WYL while at Redwood. “This year was definitely harder than all the rest,” Somavia mentioned. “But we worked hard and we really wanted it and I feel like it was well deserved.” Somavia feels like the team had prepared very well for it, and it was shown by how they played. In all of the other games, Somavia says that they really tried to come out on top all the time, but this time “we were ready to get this game finished.”

Gabby Bridges ’20, thinks that winning WYL was really exciting and a big deal. “Mentally, we knew we had to win this game and go all out.” The biggest moment of the game was when Evan House ’20, scored the only goal during the whole game. Bridges feels like during the entire game, everyone’s energy was really high up there. “This game was different because we all knew we had to win and we just wanted to finish out.”

Ashley Todd, ’21, expressed her gratitude of winning WYL for the eighth time. “It feels really great,” Todd said. “It has really helped us grow as a team.” Throughout the game, the girls kept their heads up and played the best they could. Todd is looking forward to another year of soccer. Todd said that this game meant more to them, because they wanted to end league on a good note.

They, being the 8th seed, won their first round of Central Section DI Playoffs against 9th seeded, Arroyo Grande in the rain on Wednesday, 2-1, and play tomorrow night at #1 seeded, Clovis North! Congratulate the girls in yet another WYL victory and wish them good luck in this post-season!
