The Redwood girls 4×400 relay team has shown much success despite their challenges they have faced throughout the season.
Although the girls are not first in WYL, Kylie Cekalski ‘22 says, “All four of us strive to go above and beyond our individual PR in the 4×4 and challenge each other to do this.”
The girls were having trouble finding a permanent team since they were all talented in other events as well. “The team has changed about two times since the season started,” says Kiley Langford ‘22.
Natalie McDonnell ‘23 adds to Langford’s statement, “There’s a lot of talented girls in the various distance groups, so we’ve been trying different combinations at the different meets. It’s hard to pick just four girls for the team.”
The challenge of each of them beating their personal records allows them to get higher up in rank for league. Roxy Bahr ‘24 says, “Our biggest competitors for the 4×4 in specific are Golden West and El Diamante, and we are currently third among the two.”
The girls 4×4 team at Golden West currently is ranked first with a 4:10.93. El Diamante comes in second with a time of 4:18.86. Cekalski, Langford, McDonnell, and Bahr come in third with 4:21.52.
The team has the potential to come first in WYL for the relay. Cekalski says, “We challenge ourselves to overcome this by pushing through lengthy workouts at practice before meets.”
Each practice leading up to WYL is important, as well as the practices after that leading towards Valley. Langford ’22 says, “I hope that we make it to Valley at the end of the season for the 4×400 relay. I think that would be an amazing experience and I’m really hopeful that we’re able to secure a spot at Valley.”
