There are many fun characters in Once Upon A Mattress. This show doesn’t disappoint with its variety of wacky fun characters that the audience can surely relate to.

Gilberto Rivas, 19′, has the pleasure to play the goofy King Sextimus. Yes, you read that right, King Sextimus, “My name is King Sextimus because I’m supposed to be a horrible womanizer, but all of that has been cut from the show, thankfully.” Gilberto describes his character as, “playful, goofy, mildly introverted but very big and fun when around trusted individuals.” King Sextimus also has an interesting quirk about him, “He was cursed by a witch long before the beginning of the musical so I don’t speak at all.”

Gilberto already has a fun outgoing personality so getting into character isn’t much of a challenge. He is very excited to play his character because he can have fun, but he does have the challenge of making sure that the audience understands what he is trying to say, “He doesn’t talk, so my character stands out because you (audience members) HAVE to look at the King to see what he’s trying to communicate.” Actions speak louder than words, and in this case it’s very loud.
