On Thursday, September 20th, 2018, the frosh/soph volleyball team gave everything they got and defeated El Diamante at Redwood High School.

The first game, the team made a few mistakes and were a little down which caused them to lose 25- 22. It was a really close game, but El Diamante was able to pull through and win the first game. That gave our Redwood girls even more determination to win the next two games.

By the second game, the team got their encouragement up and ended up winning 25- 18. Everyone was cheering and bringing each other up. They made a few mistakes, but that didn’t stop them from losing. Elise Hyde, ’22, said that, “We had so much energy and got inside of El Diamante’s head.” One of the players had a really good serving streak and that gave them a lot of points to pull ahead.

According to Hyde, the third game was pretty intense. They pulled it off and won 15-2. Hyde said, “It was really cool because we really wanted to beat El Diamante and our coach was very happy with us after the game.” They had a lot of teamwork and talking.

Kaylyn Cabanas, ‘22, the setter, feels that a strong defining moment in the game was when Julia Avina-McCabe, ’21, and Aleena Sanchez, ’22, got a lot of digs. Cabanas said that, “They got the ball right to the setter and the setter was able to make a lot of good sets for the hitters to hit.”

Cabanas noticed that one of El Diamante’s strengths was their defense. Their weakest part was their hitters. Hyde said, ” One of their weaknesses was their mentality; It was going down because we were fired up. They didn’t know how to come back from that.”

To improve from last nights game, Cabanas said, “I can be a little louder cheering on my team. I was a little off last night, but we still pushed through it.” Hyde said that she can improve by learning how to transition to her position when she is going to do her approach. As a team, Hyde thinks that they need to be more consistent and have the same momentum as that game.
