As of March 25th, 2021 Redwood High school started in-person learning. Students were excited to see their friends and finally return back to Redwood’s campus.

However many incoming freshmen were kind of weary about the return to school. There is no doubt that some freshmen were feeling anxious and nervous about having to go in person.

Some concerns may have been, where do I go? How do I find this class? Will I have enough time? What if I get lost? Or will I get to see my friends?  Many freshmen had concerns but was the first day back as stressful as they thought it would be?

Jordin Hinsley, ‘24, stated, “As a freshman I was worried about not being able to see my friends on a daily basis. I am a huge social butterfly, and I love hanging out with friends and talking to people, so going into a new school year and potentially not having that worried me.”

The first day of school was new for everyone. Due to the pandemic the school is having to enforce many new protocols such as one way walkways, social distancing in classes, masks, sanitization and more. It may have been overwhelming for students to have to remember to only go a certain way, stay away from their friends, and keep their masks on.

Payten Ball, ‘24, stated “I thought that everyone was going to be super strict on social distancing, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought.”

Hinsley also stated “My first day wasn’t as bad as I thought it was gonna be. It went pretty smoothly and there weren’t many problems, it is just something new that I needed to get used to.”

Due to the fact that the school is doing both A, and B tracks, and distance learning, class sizes have definitely decreased. Some classes have as big as 18 people, and others are as small as 3 people.

Ball stated, “I thought that people were going to talk more and be very social, but people barely talk during classes.”

Tons of freshmen were nervous about coming back to school, whereas others had no concerns whatsoever. Ball also stated, “I wasn’t nervous about the return to school, I just didn’t know what high school in person would be like.”

Alyssa Avalos, ‘24, stated “I wasn’t really nervous about returning to school, I just didn’t like that it was only 3 classes a day and that we wouldn’t be able to get as much stuff done.

Eloy Cisneros, ‘24, stated his opinions also. He stated, “I wasn’t nervous at all, I was excited to come back. It was exactly how I thought the return to in person was going to be.”

School right after a global pandemic was and is still an adjustment that many students, and staff are still trying to get used to. These next few weeks will allow for testing purposes on how we can improve the 2021-2022 school year, and hopefully get back to normal.
