Throughout the week of February 1-5, Redwood counselors visited students in their English classes to help them schedule their classes for next year. Usually this takes place during class when students are in person. However, since students are on full- distance learning, counselors visited the flex time during English classes.

Counselors advised students on which classes they need to take in order to graduate or to qualify to apply for colleges and universities. Students were also advised on how to sign up on Powerschool for their classes for the 2021-2022 school year.

Assistant Principal, Mrs. Barba- Tepper, was one of leaders in organizing this scheduling process. According to her, “Redwood counselors have been planning for registration season since December. They wanted to make sure to anticipate any challenges or issues so that we could plan for them ahead of time.”

There has been a lot more planning that has gone into the scheduling process because students are not able to easily visit their counselors on campus. Instead students are reliant on email, Powerschool, and Schoology. The process, “went well because counselors were still able to present information as well as show a screencastify video with more detailed instructions for the online registration process.”

“A setback might be that students do not ask as many questions in class as we are used to seeing. I am not sure if that is caused by “zoom shyness” or students really do not have many questions about the process.” Students are advised that if they have any questions or concerns at all, they should not hesitate to email their counselors.

Scheduling classes online is much more challenging than being in person. But according to Barba- Tepper, “Students should be checking their Gmail accounts weekly this semester.” Students should be able to find, “most items on the Redwood website or on Schoology.”
