For many high school seniors, picking a major for college may be a difficult thing to do. However, there are students who have their mind set and know just what they want to do.

Raul Arredondo ‘23 is a student at Redwood High School who plans to major in music education at California State University, Fresno (Fresno State).

Arredondo says that he chose to attend this university because “the cost of the school is very affordable.”

He says that he wanted to major in music education because “I love music and I want to show kids how amazing music can be.” His inspiration for continuing and majoring in music in college came from his music teachers. Arredondo says “My music teachers showed me a different way of seeing music. And I’m truly grateful for that.”

Arredondo says that he wants to start teaching at the high school level and then eventually work with college students. He says that he will “100 percent stick to music.”

Arredondo says he figured out that he wanted to major in music education when, “in the summer I asked myself ‘what drives me’ and I realized that music is what I want to do.”

For Arredondo, Melchor Carillo, the choir director at Redwood, and Jordan Ray, the band director at Redwood, have both shown him how music can change a person. “And they have changed me. The way they teach. I want to live up to their standards.”

He says that his family questioned his choice of majoring in music education in college. But in the end, his family supported him and his decision no matter what. That as long as he loves it, then he’ll do it.

Arredondo would like to add that he is truly thankful for Mr. Ray and Mr. Carillo for being his biggest influence when it comes to music. “Also to the people who have supported me [since] day one. Makes me truly grateful. And I will not disappoint.”
