I’m sure you’ve stayed up late wondering what the best type of milk is.
After a year of trying out different types of milk, and a night of further research, I have concocted a list of the best milks on the market thus far.
How shall thou score? Good question!
This scoring system is based off price per liquid ounce, flavor, health benefits, and caloric comparisons.
Let’s start with one we are mostly all familiar with. Soy milk is a classic. The consistency is similar to regular milk, maybe thicker, it has a cream color, and it tastes very neutral. Per cup of soy milk, there are 131 calories and 7 grams of protein–making it a filling drink. Soy also has a class of phytoestrogens called isoflavones; which are basically a lesser version of estrogen, (female hormone); but the research for whether or not this affects male hormones is weak too. Also, almost 90% of the soy produced in the United States is genetically modified, which doesn’t sit well with some people.

Almond milk is a well known plant based milk too. It has an earthier flavor, slightly sweeter almost. If you get the all-natural, unsweetened type, one cup has 30-60 calories, (and no saturated fat!) but it can go higher depending on what the brand is. It’s a lot more watery than soy milk, and is not a good source for protein but, it has Vitamin A and D.

Coconut milk. No surprise, this one tastes like coconuts, so if you like that, try this one out. (Not the cans, but the cartons). Unsweetened coconut milk has about 45 calories, and 0 grams of protein. It’s consistency is not super liquid, but it’s not super thick, and it’s a bright white color. It’s high in saturated fat; medium chain triglyceride. This type of fat has been linked to fat loss.

Last but not least, we have oat milk. Oat milk has a creamy texture, and a yellowish color. About 100 calories per cup, and 2-3 grams of fiber too. Oat milk is great in coffee, cereal, and oat milk, as it’s richer and creamier. The flavor is very neutral, nothing too intense. It’s sweeter than most other milks, and tastes very similar to cow’s milk. There are 3 grams of protein in oat milk. Oat milk also has B vitamins, and minerals, including iron, calcium, and magnesium.

Enjoy!!!
