The school year just started and homecoming is already here. So that means new dress-up days, but are they unoriginal?
We spoke to a few students that gave their opinions about the dress-up days! Some of them were excited because it was their first year in high school! Some were surprised that people actually dressed up on the dress-up days and some were bummed that they weren’t all that great and that they were repeating dress-up days every year!
Ciera Sesock ’22 is excited about the Nickelodeon theme for the dress-up days. She says that the dress-up day that might be the hardest is the 90’s day, “I don’t know how I am going to be able to dress up for that one.” One that she’s super excited for is the VSCO and e-boy day. “Yes and no” Sesock says to the question about ASB repeating the same dress-up days, “But they also make it relevant to today like VSCO day”. She also told us that she already has three of her outfits planned and ready for the dress-up week.
Seamus Johnson ’19 on the other hand, was not overly enthused by this year’s dress-up days. Being a senior, Johnson has seen many dress up weeks. He says, “I feel like the things we do for dress-up weeks are very repetitive and people don’t get as excited anymore.” Johnson later went on to explain how in his opinion, dress-up days are almost the same just with small changes, “Power Ranger day is just color day, e-boy and TikTok day is just meme day and Drake and Josh day is just twin day.” When asked how ASB could prevent this in the future, Johnson suggests that they could go more out of their way to get the student body involved in selecting the dress-up days.
On the contrary, a few of the freshman were very surprised by how excited everyone gets for dress-up days. Sierra Nelson ’23 said, “I think it’s fun. It’s cool to see people get involved.” We asked if she was disappointed with any of the dress-up days, this being her first year. Nelson responded, “No, so far it’s pretty cool. Everyone actually does the dress-up days, even though there is nothing we’re getting out of it.” Being pretty excited with the amount of school spirit, Nelson had little complaints. However, she was a little confused about vsco girl/ eboy day, like a lot of others.
So far this week, a lot of students have been showing their school spirit by dressing up for most of the dress-up days. Although there may be some changes that could be made in the future, the student’s love for Redwood is what makes these weeks enjoyable.
