Yesterday morning, August 24th, Zoom was having difficulties to the point where some classes didn’t even happen.
Mr. Ray, the band teacher here at Redwood had his 0-2 periods cancelled because of the zoom failure. Luckily, Ray had already published the agenda for that day and had his students follow that. In addition, he also emailed and sent a remind text to each of his classes to be sure to check the agenda and proceed like they normally would.
Unfortunately, because of the outage, Ray was unable to personally check in on his students’ progress, he had to “trust that they were getting everything done correctly.”
Lucas Washam, ‘22 is one student out of many who did not have class due to technical difficulties on Zoom. One class specifically that was not working was Advanced Band with Mr. Ray. Washam, “got 100% ready for school, dressed, ate breakfast and everything just to see that class had been canceled at 7:20, when class was supposed to start.”
Mr. Ray sent out emails ot his students and gave them the agenda for what they would have done in class, “so basically we just had to practice a section of the song that Advanced Band is preparing for our virtual concert” Washam says.
Washam has not minded using Zoom so far and “while it is still not ideal compared to what we had before corona, Zoom is usually very consistent.”
Mariela Galvan, a clinic receptionist, has two kids (2nd and 4th grade) attending Houston Elementary School. She took about 20 minutes trying to log in her kids onto the website. At first she thought her “internet connection was acting slow,” but then received a call from the district “of the issues regarding Zoom.” She explains how “It’s a very high possibility that Zoom will crash again, especially since it is used by many people at once.”
“Zoom is making a huge impact…It’s a way students can continue their education.”
