Due to Covid-19, all sports were and some still are put on hold until the second semester of the school year.

But, on October 7th, Redwoods’ Volleyball team and all fall sports began conditioning with various restrictions and requirements for the players.

“We look forward to being in our Redwood gym with balls, nets, and an actual court,” says Redwoods varsity volleyball coach Alana Montgomery.

Coming off an undefeated season till playoffs Montgomery says “expectations are to repeat the successes of last season and go further into valley playoffs and to keep a lookout for Mia Gilcrest a starting outside hitter and Andrea Jauregui a starting defensive specialist.”

Montgomery also says, “As always we are going to work as hard as we are going to work as hard as we can and make adjustments as necessary, but just give it all we’ve got with the season we’ve been dealt.”

Andrea Jauregui, ‘21 is a 3-year varsity libero on Redwoods’ volleyball team and says “It’s a bittersweet moment since its exciting knowing it’s my senior year playing but it’ll also be my last year and there is a high possibility that there will be no season.”

Having high hopes, Jauregui is putting in her all for her last year and season here at Redwood and won’t let everyone’s high expectations down.

Knowing that in a couple of months, tryouts and the season may come is something all the athletes are looking forward to and there are a lot of opportunities for these girls.

“It’s hard to stay motivated in times like this but I always try to hope for the best,” Jauregui also says, since they don’t know what to expect at times like this.

Bellah Mitchell, ‘23, an athlete hoping to try out for a team her first year of high school says, “It is definitely not what I was hoping for, but I am trying to make the best of what we are able to do so far.”

However, Mitchell also says, “Conditioning is lots of fast-paced workouts which I expected.”

With Covid-19 putting high school athletes’ ability to play on hold, these volleyball girls are grateful to at least be able to condition and be able to see the competition they are up against. Everyone is looking forward to and ready for the season this winter.
