Nathan Perez ‘23, who is also the president of the graphic design club, designed the program for Redwoods 2023 musical“Bye Bye Birdie”
Perez first picked up the program on January 15th and he said “the most challenging part of designing the program is rolling with the spontaneous changes.” They had to stay flexible throughout the entire process of the program.
Since he had to make many changes when making the program, Perez said “I felt like I finished the program multiple times before it was truly done.”
He had help from many people, he said “our director, Mrs.Galvan, always has time to discuss the program, and most of the bios were compiled by Kylie Schieferle.” So he was mostly concerned and focused on graphic design.
There are many things Perez enjoys about designing the program and he shares that his favorite part is designing something in-period; researching period- specific graphic design and replicating them in the program.
Last year when Perez designed the “Footloose” program he said “I was able to learn about and dabble in the chaotic, iconically 80s design style known as “Memphis”.” Also, he got into designing the program and said it happened “when Mrs. Galvan commissioned me to make the program for “Footloose”.”
Mrs. Galvan noticed the work he was doing under his graphic design for the club, Creative Design, and that was when she first introduced Perez to the process of making the program.
After helping out last year, Perez said “I was more than happy to hear that I’d once again be able to help out with the program this year” now that he is even more experienced with designs.
Some things he has helped with are business cards, posters and designed pamphlets for the City of Visalia.
He shared that designing the musical program is very different from his other projects he had done before because “the workflow is much more collaborative and spontaneous.”
Perez would lastly like to add that Mrs. Galvan has helped him alot and said “she is the greatest editor and mentor I could hope for in designing our show’s programs.”
