A Redwood star familiar with the headlines Alyssa Sozinho ’23 plans on majoring in Music Education at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly).

She says, “I want to focus on Music Education and the vocal side of that.” She shared that she has already bonded with the directors and professors at the school. Sozinho says, “I love their music program”.

She was involved in music by having a part time job that teaches the arts to youth. She said because of that, “it showed me that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.”

Even though she found out that she wanted to major in Music Education this year, she shared that she wants to teach music and says “it’s my passion.”

The people that have been supporting her were Mr. Carrillo, who is Redwood’s Choir Director and Ms. Board, the accompanist, and they have been “helping me pick college audition songs, playing piano for my audition recordings, and writing letters of recommendation.”

She also says, “My voice teacher Allison Marquez Djordjevic helped me believe in myself enough to take a leap of faith and follow my passion into the collegiate level.”

Majoring in music is different because if “you don’t make it past the last round of your music audition you do not just accept at all to the school.” There are many processes to get into the school and that includes sending “three classical songs that are all in different languages. Then they make cuts.”

After the last round of audition, “you’ll be invited to drive down to the school and sing in front of judges. You also are tested on sight reading, rhythm, piano, and music theory along with an interview.”

Sozinho lastly shares “I am so grateful that I get to study what I love most in life in college and get to continue doing it the rest of my life.”
