The Redwood Music Department has many talented students. Jaden Bullock ’23, might just be the most accomplished. Having made history by being a two time all-state bass trombonist, This year he became the principal (1st chair) bass trombone in the highest honor band in the state, The California All State Wind Symphony. This fall he will be attending The University of North Texas (UNT) to major in Classical Trombone Performance.

Bullock chose to attend UNT for the reason it’s “in the next evolution of my growth as both a musician and [a] person. I need to go to a place where I will constantly be challenged.” As a successful musician he seeks motivation to assist his musical development.

UNT is globally respected by many people as one of the top music programs, and he shares that “every year both undergraduates, graduate and doctoral students constantly win National and International awards.”

At UNT, Bullock will study under the guidance of some of the world’s finest trombonists such as Tony Baker, Natalie Mannix, and Steven Menard.

When Bullock visited UNT, he felt that “the faculty and [trombone] studio immediately made it feel like a family.”

“My friends remain to always push me and never allow me to stay stagnant” Which Bullock finds important because he shares how crucial it is to “surround yourself with people that will always push you.” Bullock mentions that Raul Arredondo [’23]and Keoni Esteves [’24] always tell him “Jaden, go show them who you are.”

Having to choose his biggest supporter is tough, but he said Jordan Ray, who is Redwood’s band director and his private teacher, “has been a huge motivator in realizing where I am at and where I need to be.” Ray has been helping Bullock by giving him the tools to fulfill these aspirations.

Music has been a part of Bullock’s life since he can remember and he says “It was an immediate connection and everyday I grow more in love with it.”

Bullock lastly adds “keep an eye out for the next generation. The tradition of talented musicians produced by Redwood will continue.”
