Giddings Street typically has very little traffic, but it can pile up during rush hour.
During lunch Wednesday, March 30, a taco truck, “Taco ‘Bout It”, spun out, overturned, and crashed. Tacos splattered everywhere.
A roadblock instantly appeared. “We stopped the cars,” says Police Officer Ken Hopkins, “but the tennis kids coming from the school were an immovable force.”
Rushing from every exit, students began surrounding the wrecked truck, eating any available taco they could find.
” of my famous tacos, all gone in under ten minutes,” says Milton Buchanan, the owner of Taco ‘Bout It. “I’m going to have to sell my business.”
The tennis team did not mind destroying Buchanan’s hard work. They only cared about the tacos.
“They were really delicious,” says Henna Campbell, class of 2025. She is a member of the tennis team.
“Even though I had to eat a few [tacos] off the floor, they [the tacos] were totally worth it.” Campbell adds.
Buchanan is upset about the failure of his business but understands the students’ perspective.
“I’m just glad so many kids were able to get fed,” Buchanan says. “Now I just need to find a new way to pay for my mom’s surgery.”
To get to the “sacred” tacos, the team jumped from the bridge connecting Redwood’s two campuses, catching tacos with their mouths as they fell.
“Sure, it was dangerous,” said Campbell. “But going without tacos seemed even more dangerous [to the team].”
In addition to jumping off of the bridge, the students destroyed fences to get their lunch.
“Actually, they [tennis team students] had no clue, but they were helping us,” says Administrator Linda White. “We were going to tear down the bridge anyways.”
The tennis team showed tremendous teamwork and effort to get to the tacos, as well as an impressive amount of physical labor just to eat the meal.
Tennis Coach Holly Ball says, “This was much more impressive than the actual tennis they’ve been playing. I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up as CIA [Central Intelligence Agency] agents with those skills.”
Buchanan has a lot of work to do. It will take months to recover from the accident.
He says, “I hope this wonderful group of students will help me rebuild my amazing business!”
