With the tradition of Cowhide, every year the Varsity Football team collectively wears a tux on game day. However, the occurring question is, how much do you really know about these tuxes?

When asked about the history of this tradition, Coach Scharton says, “It was here when I went to school here, so I’m not sure when the tradition started but I know it dates back to the 70’s.”

Scharton also says, “It means a lot to me because I grew up going to the Cowhide, I played in the Cowhide, and now I’m coaching in the Cowhide, so it’s a big deal.”

Ambrose Bueno ‘23 says, “Wearing tuxes on Cowhide makes me feel really fancy, it makes me feel really good.”

As Cowhide is the one game day the players get to wear a tux, some players were asked if it has a different feel than the rest.

Evan Galley ‘24  says, “It feels more important than normal games.”

Rhett Johnson ‘24 also says, “Of course it does, to win big games you need to have swagger, the tuxes make you feel like a boss the entire day.”

Many may also wonder if the boys are covering the costs of this attire, or if the boosters are paying for it in any way. Evan Gonzalez ‘23 says, “We pay for them out of pocket and last year Tux n Tails took off some money as a deal with Redwood.”
