On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, voters in California and 14 other states will head to the polls to participate in the 2024 Presidential Primary Elections.

Primary elections allow voters to determine who will appear on the ballot for the Presidential Election in November. The specifics can vary from state to state, but the overall process is similar nationwide.

States can hold their elections on different days. The day when the greatest number of states hold their primaries becomes known as “Super Tuesday.” Due to the number of states participating on Tuesday, it has become known as Super Tuesday 2024.

While called the Presidential Primary Election, other offices and ballot measures can appear on the ballot.

Ballots will vary depending on where a voter lives and their party registration, but most voters can expect to choose candidates for multiple offices. (See a list for Tulare County here.)

Choosing a party’s nominee is similar to how presidents are elected through the Electoral College.

It starts with the voters. Voters will choose a person from a list of candidates they would like to see their party nominated for the General Election in the Fall.

The two major parties, Democratic and Republican, have delegates to represent the party in each state. California has 424 Democratic delegates and 169 Republican delegates.

After a winner for each party is determined in the state, the delegates representing that state will vote for that candidate at the party’s National Convention.

To win the Democratic nomination, a candidate must win 1,968 out of 3,934 total delegates. To win the Republican nomination, a candidate must win 1,215 out of 2,429 total delegates.
