Shelby Somavia ‘24 is the catcher for varsity softball. She recently broke the record for most home runs hit in a single game.

Somavia started playing softball at the age of twelve and began by the influence of her friends.

She says she continued playing softball as it, “Really gave me an output in my life, it was always there for me so it always stuck with me through all these years.” Continuing to be consistent with softball has helped Somavia reach her goals.

At an at home tournament, Somavia broke a school record by hitting 3 homeruns in a single game against Taft. The game ended with a score of 8-0.

Somavia wasn’t aware of breaking the record. It was not until an article was published that she found out about her accomplishment.

She says that breaking the record, “Made me feel proud of myself especially through these years since it has been hard.”

Somavia adds that, “Breaking a school record was really something I was excited for.”

She sets more goals for the rest of the season. “I really want to break how many home runs in a season which is 11 and I have 6 so far,” says Somavia.

To reach and achieve those goals she says she plans on, “Really working hard each day at practice and making sure my swing is perfect and if it’s not then doing whatever I need to do to perfect it.”

Continuing into the season Somavia plans on working towards winning WYL with her team for her next big accomplishment.

She says, “We came up short on it last year but we definitely have the team to do it this year.”
