On Wednesday, October 19th middle schools Green Acres and Divisadero had their annual Rabbit Hide game. The Rabbit Hide is the middle school version of Redwood’s and Mt Whitney’s cowhide.

Green Acres travels to Divisadero to play on the road in a mini pick up game with Redwoods starting quarterback Frankie Alvarez ‘23, and Pioneers starting quarterback Dominic Pineda ‘23.

The game was a 4-4 with three receivers lined up and one running back in the backfield each led by their correct high school quarterback.

Talking about the Rabbit Hide, Green Acres Athletic Director says, “I think this is going to be an event to kinda hope expose that and kinda build that culture and rivalry and camaraderie amongst these guys.”

These players have been preparing all week for this game in aspirations to win the hide.

Green Acres player Jos Gay says, “[trainings] been like a little tough like we’re working hard you know getting ready to get the Rabbit Hide Back.”

Former Redwood Vice Principal and current Divisadero principal Alex Marroquin designed this event to bring the two schools together as well as their prospective high schools.

He says, “I want to see more whole school events for middle school because my kids need it, my parents need it, my teachers need it and I have great relationships with coach Scharton and coach Chamberlin Whitney and Redwood so why not exploit those relationships and really tap into just maximizing things for Divisadero’s kids.”

Dominic Pineda

Mt. Whitney Quarterback Dominic Pineda ‘23, is a Divisadero alumni who grew up into a pioneer.

He says, “It’s cool coming back to my old middle school it’s fun seeing all these little kids and everything how I used to be when I came in it’s fun coming back.”

As the game started Green Acres led by Frankie Alvarez ‘23 started their drive getting down to the 10 yard line then connecting to a Green Acres receiver giving them an early lead 7-0.

Divisadero got the ball and started their drive but was ultimately denied a touchdown by tough Ram Defense.

Anthony Alvarez left Frankie Alvarez Right

Later on in the game Green Acres went out on the field in hopes of a touchdown. As the play was snapped Frankie Alvarez ‘23 made a quick pass to his brother Anthony Alvarez ‘28 and he stretched it out and got a touchdown out of the play.

Frankie said, “I think it something that we have always kinda dreamed about you know even though we have a big age gap there was somehow a way for us to play.”

Anthony said, “I think it’s honestly a dream come true I have dreamed of playing with him like actual tackle football in high school but because of our big age gap, it’s not going to happen but this is as close as it will get but I really just enjoyed this.l”
