Students at Redwood High School are asked about their hobbies and collections.

A certain student in particular named Jacob Yang ‘24 frequently spends his time building mechanical keyboards.

Yang says, “I’ve been doing it for about a year and a half and I do it because I like building things and because I have a lot of free time.”

Yang estimates that it can take up to 8 hours for him to complete just one keyboard.

When asked about the components of his keyboards Yang said, “Each keyboard is made up of different parts like key caps, switches and then the main board itself.”

“There is a PCB that the switches plug into and then the key caps go on top of the switches and then you have a keyboard,” says Yang.

Yang also says that he buys the specific parts that he needs and then it becomes pretty easy for him to begin his creation.

“I build them for my friends, so if it is their birthday or Christmas I will just build them a keyboard.”
