Today, January 25th, 2019, it was officially released that Kevin Scharton, former Dinuba head coach and Redwood alumni, was hired as the new Redwood head coach for the upcoming 2019-2020 season. After many interviews earlier this week, it came down to two names and Scharton was offered the job and he accepted it.

Last year, Scharton led his boys to an overall 9-3 record and 4-1 Central Sequoia League record. He’s been a head coach for 17 years at Dinuba High and was able to pull off 2 Central Section Division III titles in 2009 and 2013. Since 2002, his overall record is 143-59 and in playoffs 15-8. He has also been nominated as Coach of the Year 7 times by his peers and the league.

Matt Sozinho, Redwood Athletic Director, said Scharton stood out as the top choice because, “[He] comes here with a lot of experience and success, he’s excited to come back to Redwood, his success and energy and passion for the game made the best impression on us.” Kevin Scharton is a Redwood alumni and looks forward to return back to his Alma Mater as the head coach this time.

He will be a teacher at Redwood now also. Sozinho agrees that he will be perceived well by the community and welcomed into the Redwood family with respect, “Once Scharton gets a chance to get on campus and build relationships, everyone will see what we saw in him.”

As far as other members of the coaching staff, Scharton will be able to coordinate his own staff then make a decision after meeting the Redwood staff and his previous assistants and coaches.
