Dominick McCormack-Weaver: Football at Cal Poly

Safety for the Redwood Varsity Football team, Dominick McCormack, ’21 officially signed to play Division 1 Football at Cal Poly University. Not only did he commit, but he also accepted a full-ride scholarship in the winter of 2020. 

McCormack has always wanted to major in Nursing, however, unfortunately, Cal Poly doesn’t offer that. Due to this, he plans on taking some classes over the Summer at Cuesta Community College where they do offer a Nursing program so he can get a step closer to becoming an RN. As of now, McCormack has decided to major in Kinesiology at Cal Poly because it’s the next closest thing to what he actually wants to pursue.

Diego Alvarado: Baseball at Oregon State

Diego Alvarado, ’21, verbally committed to Oregon State University last fall during his junior year and plans to major in bio-health sciences. Oregon State is a NCAA Division 1 school and part of the Pac-12 conference. Alvarado plays third base and has been a part of the Varsity team since sophomore year.

Chase Banks: Baseball at Williamette College

Chase Banks, ‘21, committed last fall to Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and will be majoring in biology. The baseball team is a Division III program in the Northwest conference coached by Aaron Swick. He has been on varsity for 2 years as a right handed pitcher. 

Ethan Garcia: Baseball at Long Beach State

As a sophomore, Ethan Garcia, ‘21, knew exactly where he wanted to be by making the early decision to commit to playing Division I Baseball for Long Beach State. Garcia has also decided to major in criminology. Long Beach State’s Baseball team is coached by Eric Valenzuela and is a part of the Big West Conference. Garcia has been an active member of the Redwood Varsity Baseball team since freshman year and is primarily a right-hand pitcher.

Lee Trevino- Baseball at Cal State Dominguez Hills

Lee Trevino, ‘21, verbally committed to Cal State Dominguez Hills in December of 2020. The Division II school is part of the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) Conference. Trevino plans to major in kinesiology. The second baseman has been a part of the Varsity team since sophomore year.

Hailey Smithson- Softball at McPherson College

In November 2019, Hailey Smithson, ’21, made the decision to commit to McPherson College located in McPherson, Kansas. She decided on McPherson because of it’s small town environment and somewhere she would love to spend her next 4 years. She intends to major in sports management. Smithson has been a part of Varsity Softball at Redwood since sophomore year and plays second base and shortstop.

Sydnee Weber- Softball at Missouri Valley

After visiting and verbally committing to Missouri Valley College this fall, Sydnee Weber, ’21, was able to officially sign her National Letter of Intent on November 4th. She also plans to major in English Literature. Weber’s been a part of the Redwood Varsity Softball all four years of high school and was also a part of the 2018 DII Valley Championship team as a freshman. She also primarily plays shortstop.

Lionel Inhphom- Track and Field at Chico State

Lionel Inhphom, ‘21, has decided that he will continue his athletic and academic career at Chico State University. The school located in Northern California is Division II and a part of the CCAA Conference. He plans to major in kinesiology.

Inhphom is a three-year Cross Country runner and has spent four years on the Varsity Track team. He participates in the 400m, 200m, 800m, 4×400 relay, Triple Jump, and Long Jump. He was also a part of the Valley Championship team in the 2019 season. Recently, he was crowned 800 WYL Champion, was a part of the 2nd place 4×400 team, and helped contribute to the team’s co-champion title last Thursday.

Victoria Nino- Cross Country & Track at Fresno State

Victoria Nino, ‘21, has officially decided to run cross country and track at Fresno State University. The Division I program is part of the Mountain West Conference. She plans to major in Kinesiology- Exercising Science. She has run Cross Country and Track all four years of high school. She is the 2021 Cross Country League Champion and during her sophomore year, she won the 1600m and 3200m in the WYL Championship. Throughout her four years, she has ranged from competing in the 800m, 1600m, 3200m, and the 4x400m relay. Recently, she took first in the 1600m and 3200m at WYL and will be competing at the Area meet next weekend.

Clark Hobbs- Track and Field at Washington State

Clark Hobbs, ‘21, is a pole vaulter who plans to continue his career at Washington State University. The school located in Pullman, Washington is Division I and is part of the Pac-12 Conference. Hobbs plans to major in mechanical engineering. His PR is 15’9 which he was able to jump shortly after COVID hit during his junior year. 

Krissy Hetherington- Cross Country & Track and Field at Azusa Pacific

Krissy Hetherington, ‘21, officially committed to running both Cross Country and Track and Field at Azusa Pacific University. APU is a Division II program and is part of the PacWest Conference. Azusa has also won the PacWest Conference 5x in a row. Hetherington has spent three years in the cross country program and four years in the track program at Redwood. She ranges from the 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, and the 4x400m relay. Hetherington plans to double major in Journalism and Honors Humanities. 

Recently, Hetherington took first in the 800m, third in the 400m, and was a part of the winning 4×400 team to help the girls outright win their 5th WYL Championship. She will also be competing at Area next weekend.

Samantha Harvell- Track and Field at University of Dubuque

Samantha Harvell, ‘21, is a four year pole vaulter and plans to further her athletic and academic career at the university of Dubuque in Iowa. She plans to major in Secondary Education. Harvell says she decided on this school because of the “kind, personal, and welcoming environment.” She said she’s looking forward to “experiencing new things even if those things are far away and a little daunting.” 

Kaiya Thompson- Track and Field at UC Santa Cruz

Kaiya Thompson, ‘21, has decided to further her education and track and field career at UC Santa Cruz. UCSC is a Division III school for athletics and Thompson also plans to major in Cognitive science. She participated in high and triple jump throughout all four years on the Varsity Track team. She is also the 2018 and 2019 WYL Champion in Triple and High Jump.
