Our Redwood Swim team had WYL on April 25th- 26th, 2019 at El Diamante High School. Both girls and boys teams won, again.

Josh Peters, ’21, said that it felt pretty awesome the moment he won because at the end when they announced the winner the whole team jumped in the water so excited. “We worked super hard for this moment because we practiced 2 hours a day and we just tried our hardest.” He feels that the team accomplished all of their goals and had people step up to help out the team. “It was pretty awesome to keep the tradition of winning 9 years in a row.” He is kind of sad because the team has some good swimmers going away but is excited for the new swimmers to come next year. “On senior night we have a relay race with all the grades against each other. We have a freshman team, sophomore team, junior team, and senior team.”

Beau Gendron, ’22, was really excited to win his first WYL for swim and said, “It felt really cool because after we won some of the guys threw our coaches in the pool.” He felt that he worked as hard as everyone else at practice and meets. This was his first year doing swim so he didn’t know what to expect, but “Going to WYL was definitely to have a chance to race against the older guys.” He said that winning 9 years in a row is definitely fun knowing that they have to keep that record of winning WYL. He is happy that swim is over but a little bit because the swim meets were fun. He feels this season really showed the coaches what he is capable of. He is excited for next year’s season.

Alexandra Roberts, ’20, said that just the feeling of winning again and jumping in the pool the moment they heard their name called was just a relief that their hard work paid off. “We worked very hard at practice, working on relays, turning, sprinting, just like every part of the race that they needed to focus on.” She reached all of her goals at WYl. She broke her school record again, the meet record, and the relays broke the school record and the meet record so she was really happy about that. “It was crazy to win 9 years in a row, but there is also a lot of pressure because they don’t want to be the year that breaks the streak.” We are excited for next year and hope to get that 10th year for her last swim season at Redwood. She feels that their bond grew a lot and they are all coming together so it will be good for next year.

Madison Allan, ’22, said that it was such a moment of accomplishment and joy. “We all jumped back in the pool and got to push our coach in it. It was an amazing celebration that’ll I’ll never forget!” She said that the team has worked so hard since November with hard long practices and that it felt super good to know everything they did paid off in the end. “I personally did not get the time I wanted but I still PRed and had an absolute blast so I’d say my goals were accomplished.” She said that it feels so good to win 9 years in a row because not that many people can say their school are 9 time champions. “It is amazing and I’m so proud to be a part of this team! It’s a sense of sadness because I will miss all my teammates and all the fun times we have together, but my body could use a break from swim!” She came into this season so scared as a little freshman on varsity but this season just made her super pumped and excited for the next 3 years to come!

Make sure to cheer on and support the teams as they move on to the Central Section Valley Championships today!
