The Rangers from Redwood High School football loses its first game back for the 22-23 school year against Bakersfield’s Centennial High School Hawks ending with a final score of 28-21.

The Rangers first game back for the 22-23 school year was played last Friday within the Mineral King Bowl. Despite the overwhelming amount of energy within the crowd Bakersfield’s Centennial slipped away with a victory of 28 to 21. Making the first game of the year a loss.
Senior Francisco Alvares ‘23 kicked the ball at the 15 yard line and Redwood’s defense stopped the Hawks in their tracks.This stop officially started off the football season. That had crowds cheering,fans yelling and excitement from not just the fans, but everyone.
Centennial High School was the first team to score two touchdowns at the 40 yard line before Redwood could even score making the score 0-14. Redwood was then able to finally score a touchdown making the score 7-14 slowly, but surely catching up with the Bakersfield’s Centennial Hawks.
Redwood Then scored another touchdown tying up with Centennial making it a close game for both teams to have a chance to win the first game for the 2022-2023 school year. In the final quarter of the game fans were biting their nails waiting for someone to score. Their fantasy for the Redwood Rangers to win came to an end when the Centennial Hawks won the game with a 28-21 score after a pass into the end zone securing the lead. Redwood only needed 7 more points, a touchdown and a successful extra point attempt.
According to The Bakersfield’s Centennial Head Coach Richard Sharrett,
“It was awesome to come up here, what a great environment and stadium and you know Redwood is an amazing team and you guys are going to win plenty of games, So for us to come up here and win against a really good team on the road is pretty big for our football team”.
Meanwhile Coach Scharton put the loss on a lack of momentum within the first half of the game.
“We just couldn’t get the motor going”.
“We continuously made mental mistakes, and it cost us”
Whereas at half time Coach Scharton pushed to calm the players down and make adjustments to run the ball more in the second half in order to open play action passing.
For future games Coach Scharton hopes to prepare his players for future games through practicing specific assignments and reviewing plays through practice. The next game will be against Clovis North (Fresno, CA) on Thursday, August 25 at 7pm in Buchanan high school.
