The ending of summer brings the beginning of the school year, and for many student athletes the beginning of their sports season.

From the start of the year it has been complicated for athletes to have any playing time on the field or court, whether that be due to the cause of teammates catching COVID or games being canceled due to the safety of others. COVID-19 has had some interruptions in practice, team meetings, and games throughout the year.

While there is still hope that student athletes will have more opportunities available this season, despite the increasing number of cases of COVID, there are much more health concerns for athletes and the students going out to support.

Varsity basketball player Ashton Ibarra, ’22 was asked how COVID has affected the senior boys basketball team, “If someone on our team tests positive, we all have to quarantine which means we lose games, I feel like it’s unfair.”

Due to COVID being at a higher risk, many student athletes have caught COVID which caused their whole team to go into quarantine, causing games to be canceled.

Eczequiel Juarrieta ’22 who is a member to the wrestling team, says, “We have to test for COVID, but it’s only once a week so it’s manageable; we aren’t able to compete in the gym though, so that’s a bummer.”

Serena Webster, ’22 who is on the girls varsity basketball team, says, “It sucks how COVID is affecting us, because we are constantly losing players because they are getting COVID, so we haven’t played with everyone in about three weeks.”
