Redwood High School is known for going big and all out in everything they do including homecoming floats for the parade after school. Before they were judged yesterday, the ’20 class of juniors has won the previous two years and was seeking to go for a 3-peat. This year’s theme: All Roads Lead to Redwood.
The most creative and hard-working students were able to come up with this idea of “Juniors in Atlantis” which was supposed to represent a destination to go along with the theme. They were able to bring this idea to life by having some students dress up as mermen and mermaids and lots of bubbles. Bubbles were many of the students’ favorite part of the entire float because as Chloe Sanchez, ’20, said, “The help with the visuals of being under the seas.”
The orgin of this idea? Savannah Travis, ’20, tells me, “In ASB, I was talking with Jada and Josh and we all wanted an idea that was unique…something no one else would do…that’s where we came up with ‘Juniors in Atlantis.’ Her and Sanchez tell me that their favorite parts about working on the float was how fun it was to be creative with friends and see this idea turn from nothing into something great.
Every year, the class uses an old Gator and decorate it in layers until they decide there is literally nothing more they could possibly add to it. They’ve knocked all other floats out of the water in recent years but this year, they definitely faced some competition. The ’21 class had a really creative “Up” themed float representing Disneyland as their destination which included tons of balloons and even walking characters from the movie. Travis and Sanchez said “The competition is in our hands and our fingers are crossed about winning and coming out the best…We always like to be competitive and use a lot of costumes to be the best of the best.”
In the end, no one was able to top the Junior Class Float for “Most Creative.” They were able to keep their reputation alive and are looking forward to taking home a 4-peat next year!
