On Tuesday, January 9th, Girls varsity soccer had their first league game against El Diamante. The game ended in a tie, as the score was 1-1.

Ellie Gilbert, ’24, says, “We played pretty well and had many scoring opportunities, but we couldn’t put them in.” Gilbert says, “We can improve on finishing because that’s what ultimately led to the score being tied.”

Gilbert says that this game sets the tone for the team. She says, “It shows that everyone wants to beat you and we have to take that and work harder with it. We just have to want it more and that creates a different mindset for the team.”

Avery Yagle, ’26, says, “We had a lot of opportunities but we couldn’t find the back of the net which which was a challenge for us.” She adds, “But overall, we had some good passing sequences, we just need to make sure we finish our chances.

Yagle says, “Even though we came out with a tie, we hadn’t had a decent team in a while so it was good getting back into a competitive level of play.”

Mr. Vieira is the head coach for the Redwood womens soccer team. He says, “There were a lot of frustrating moments. We didn’t really come out strong in the first half and I think that hurt us a lot because we didn’t have a lot of rhythm.”

He says, “In the second half we played better but we missed a lot of chances to finish goals and put the other team away.”

Viera explains that there were, “five or six moments where they had really good goal-scoring opportunities, so finishing on crosses will help.”

Vieira finishes, “I think it was a good wake-up call for the team, especially the younger girls. Winning league is difficult and there is a lot of pressure at Redwood to win. We need to learn how to harness that pressure and play with it.”
