It is hard to understand how one student can manage to take multiple AP classes, play sports, and do this all with a job on top. Some Redwood students go above and beyond in every one of these aspects. Each student responds with different struggles they face when maintaining the constant pressure. Four students were interviewed to really get the inside scoop of what they go through on a daily basis and how they deal with the problems they are confronted with.
Maria Barillas,’19, is an AP student and is on the Varsity girls wrestling team. As well as all this, she also works at KFC on the weekends. She says, “I just work around my schedule and use time management to make sure I balance what is more important and make sure it all gets done.” When things start to get stressful for Maria she likes to hang out with friends and watch movies and be a kid while she still can. It is just all about finding time for everything and having your priorities straight on what is more important.
Having a social life is important to many high school students and working can affect this in either a positive or negative way. Savannah Surfus, ’19, a varsity basketball player, works at Popeyes most days of the week. She says her social life is affected tremendously, “I have little time on my hands and when I do I hangout with my close friends, so I don’t really get to go out and make new friends.” Jason Hruby, ’19, feels the same way as Surfus. Hruby says, “I have lost friends because I am not able to keep friendships…I am either working or have football.”
Justin Carrasco,’19, on the other hand, believes that having his job at Starbucks has boosted his social life because now he has made new friends at work while keeping his friends at school. All these students have different views on how their social life is affected by their job.
Overall, these high schoolers like being involved in the school. Jobs and school can be difficult but once you find a way to manage it all it becomes a lot easier to handle.
