Coach Vieira shares his thoughts on what he is looking for in soccer for the season ahead.
By: Gabby Vasquez
Coach Vieira has been coaching Girls Soccer at Redwood High School for fifteen years.
In addition to coaching he has also been teaching AP US History.
When asked if there were any big holes to fill (positions wise), he said “Yeah we have [holes in the team to fill] we lost a couple of really strong seniors.”
The seniors Vieira lost were Jamie Gomez, ’25, Alec Ortiz, ’25, Lexi Rico, ’25, and Makenzie Velasquez ’25.
These players positions were: left-hand side, middle, center back and goalkeeper.
He said, “replacing those four players is kind of like what we’re most concerned about right now.”
Vieira acknowledges that being in division one means there will always be tough competition.
For this year’s season Vieira said “We have the mental toughness in certain moments, so that we don’t let the match get away from us.”
Vieira knows the importance of being able to play under pressure and said, “when we have to play in high pressure situations: like a penalty shootout, just making sure we’re better prepared for that. Mentally we have to get a bit tougher.”
This year the obvious goals for Vieira would be, “a league title and a section title. Those are always the two things that we strive for.”
Vieira understands the significance of winning every game in the league and sees the importance of receiving a league title.
He says “We’ve won the league title every year, but one. And people act like, oh, it’s not even a big deal to win league anymore, but to me it is; and to our girls that play.”
Overall Vieira says, “talent wise, skill wise, I think we’re going to match up with every single team that we play.”
