Ethan Scholl ‘21 , Makayla Hernandez ‘21 and Steven Santana ‘20 originated the band Goodbye Art in July of 2019, their music style is experimental and consists of many different genres.

Being in a band to Hernandez is, “enjoyable yet, we still have our ups and downs, having to prepare and practice for the show has been hard especially having a busy schedule…we both do extracurricular activities and its kind of hard to maintain a balance.”

Hernanzes explains her bands music taste as, “Basically with the three of us, we all have a general similarity in the types of music we listen to, and bands and artists we look up to. I’d say more so within the alternative scene, and music old and modern. I think it’s really important to not confine your music preferences to one set genre because then that really doesn’t add into any variety- or say in moving onwards with progressing your music, if you have everything sounding the same- I feel like there’s no evolution in your craft. It kinda takes the fun out of it, because redundant is boring.”

When creating a set list they want something that fits their taste and the taste of their audiences.  “Lately, Ethan has been working out the majority of our instrumentals and Stevie will weave in some bass into it and sometimes I’ll tweak it a bit so I can play it comfortably. While he does that, I write the lyrics and it’s just a creative building process. So for the songs, we are playing all originals except for two covers.” Hernandez says. She started writing songs around the sixth grade, song writing to her is a “push outside of her comfort zone but in a positive way.” And Scholl writes for the instrumental parts.

The two cover songs are Piggy by Nine Inch Nails and Happy Christmas  (war is over) by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Santana suggested Piggy because it, “has a very amazing bass line and I’ve always wanted to cover it.” And Happy Christmas is one of Hernandez’s favorite Christmas songs.

Scholl and Hernandez wanted to have a festival after they hosted a house show, “many people showed up and enjoyed themselves, the overall experience was one we wanted to repeat with more going into the process of organizing it instead of it being completely sporadic.”

Getaway Fest is “almost like a mini festival- filled with local bands around Tulare county.” Scholl explains. The Fest is a way that local writers, singers, musicians can display their art form to a bigger audience. The search for local artists started back in August, “Ethan honestly was the one to just spontaneously follow through with this and make it happen himself with promoting getaway fest. Eventually we had a lot of bands asking if they could play for us, and as of right now we have 11 bands who are planned to perform on the 21st.” Artists include ISHMAEL, Hybrid Trees, Weird Alt Girl, The Shallows, Artesia, The Dying Suns, Daze Baby, DATE, Calavera & TSS, 40 OZ MOV.
