By Ayla Ozturk– Letter written by Amanda Richard Ed.D.

On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, Principal Dr. Amanda Richard will graduate the class of 2023.

Although she has prepared for many graduations, the class of 2023 will be the first class that Dr. Richard graduates at Redwood High School.

“I am excited to have the honor of presenting the Ranger class of 2023,” Dr. Richard says. “They are a special class.”

Dr. Richard writes…

Ranger Seniors,

It is with many mixed emotions that I sit down to write a letter to you. As we embark upon the last few days with one another, it has caused me to spend some significant time reflecting on your high school experience, future endeavors, and the school’s role in both of these.

I must admit I have mixed feelings about this next chapter for all of you and what the next phase of your life will hold for you. On one hand, I am extremely excited for each of you, and on the other, I am saddened to think that our daily interactions will soon come to a halt.

This class is special. The class of 2023 possesses an abundance of students with qualities of leadership, citizenship, passion, hard work, and dedication that I know will serve each of you well as you go out into the world. As seniors, I have been impressed by your lead-by-example character, attitude, and presence here at Redwood.

While Redwood will miss you, I am so incredibly proud of and excited for you. I am inspired by the opportunities and successes that lie before you. I am still in awe of the legacy you have left in our halls, on our walls, and in our hearts.

You are my first graduating class as a principal. As I am sure it is for you, this time of year has become very emotional for me.

The principalship is such an incredible opportunity. This past year that we have been together, you all have taught me more about education, leadership, and community than I can even begin to put into words.

I started my journey at Redwood hearing from all that have come before me that Redwood High School is a “special place.” Over this past school year, I can see that this is true, and it is because of all of the wonderful people here at Redwood.

I am blessed for the relationships your class has built with me, and I am humbled and honored to serve as your principal. Your actions, words, accomplishments, time, dedication, passion, perspective, and voice all have worked to influence me as an educator and leader.

No matter the next steps on your life journey, remember…

Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger…be proud of that. This will always be a home for you…please visit often.

I will always respect and admire you. Please know how much all of you mean to me and the teachers and staff here at Redwood.

I am compelled to leave you with a few quotes to take with you along your journey.

“If you want to be the best, you have to do things other people aren’t willing to do.”

Michael Phelps

“Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.”

John Wooden

And my personal favorite…

“Be so good they can’t ignore you!”

Steve Martin

Thank you, class of 2023. You have left a mark on the city of Visalia and Redwood High School. You are next in line, and your opportunities are endless. Embrace the challenges, celebrate your successes, and make us all proud.

It is a great day to be a Ranger!

Amanda Richard Ed.D.
