This month’s chosen book is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen!

Hatchet tells the story of a boy, Brian, traveling to go spend the summer with his dad until plans go awry. The plane crashes in the Canadian North Woods and Brian is the only one to make it out of the crash alive. Brian is stranded on the island for days upon days and is left to fend for himself with only a hatchet along with a couple of other items.

This book received a Newbery-Honor winning young adult novel in 1986 so you know this is a good book. I for one know that this book kept you on the edge of your seat. Will he be saved in time? You won’t know until you read this well-loved book by many!

I highly recommend reading this first book of the five-part novel. The second, third, fourth and fifth books are The River, Brian’s Winter, Brian’s Return and Brian’s Hunt.

Hatchet is definitely a shorter book that has the reading level of 10-14-year-olds. But, it is definitely still a fascinating read while being a young-adult fiction along with being an action and survival story.

An interesting fact about the author! ~~Gary Paulsen himself has been in two forced landings, luckily not crashes. He drew from those experiences to write his book.~~
