During cowhide week, Redwood has many traditions that have been going on for years and years. When it comes to Cowhide and Homecoming, certain students will participate in activities during lunch time to spread school spirit to others. From a donut eating contest, to lip syncing; the varsity boys have a good time with each other as a team and their Redwood family.
Each day was different activity for the boys to do such as dodge ball, donut eating contest, fear factor, and lip syncing. It is a time for the boys to have fun and relax before the big game Friday night.
Mrs. Aston, the ASB adviser, explained how the lunchtime activities were picked were and developed by the ASB students. At first, “The class as a whole submits their ideas of what will be fun and then we vote on them as a whole.” There is a group known as the lunchtime committee and they are in charge of putting the days in order of what will happen each day.
When it comes to deciding on what activity, it will need to sometimes have to match a certain theme. Aston adds, “ If it is cowhide there are certain activities that happen every year just like homecoming, so for the most part we have to find three different ones and two that stay the same just as part of the tradition.”
Mia Maciel, ‘22, is a student who enjoys watching the lunchtime activities because, “The games allow the students to see the football player’s silly side.” As a student Maciel believes these activities can be encouraging to those who do not go out the football game and gives them the chance to see who the players are of the varsity team. She also said, “It might also give some a chance to see how they can get involved with ASB and might want to join.”
Cowhide is a time of working together as one big Redwood family and putting in a lot of work to get a good outcome on Friday. It is also a new experience for some to see how lunch works during these exciting times and how fun Redwood can be.
