When people hear the word “art”, the first things that come to mind are paintings and drawings of beautiful landscapes and objects. But what about music?

Music is a topic that is very popular in modern-day society, but not commonly recognized as being an art. In the masses of acclaimed musicians, people can fail to recognize the skill and talent that is required to perform in this art. Devin Calderon, ’23, is a musician in every sense of the word.

Calderon is one of the rare people that have perfect pitch, which is the ability to “identify the pitch of a note just by hearing it”. This ability allows people to transcribe audio music to paper very easily, which aids them in arranging and composing music.

Calderon arranges music for the band. He has arranged the songs Industry Baby, Wii theme, and Golden Ticket Theme, two of which were played by the band at the 2022 Hoco Ralley.

Since beginning his musical career, Calderon has learned to play the clarinet, piano, trumpet, saxophone, and oboe. He claims that he can “pick up most instruments, as long as they’re not guitar and flute”.

After high school, Calderon plans on majoring in music composition and living life “composing and arranging professionally”. His top colleges are Long Beach, Northridge, and Fullerton because they are “some of the top music schools in the state”.

You can hear more of Calderon’s music at Redwood Football games and band competitions.
